The City of West Carrollton Fire Department has promoted Jonah Nassmacher to Fire Captain, recognizing more than a decade of service, training, and leadership within the department.
Nassmacher said his interest in the fire service began at an early age. He had wanted to become a firefighter since childhood, with a high school job shadow experience helping confirm that path. Nassmacher began his career with the department in 2013 as a part-time firefighter. Early in his tenure, he made the decision to build his career in West Carrollton. “Very shortly after starting, I decided this is where I wanted to root my career,” Nassmacher said.
He transitioned to a full-time Firefighter/Paramedic role in 2017 and continued to expand his experience through technical rescue certifications, leadership training, and formal education, including earning an associate degree. Over time, he served in a relief capacity for command staff before being assigned as Acting Captain in August 2024. His promotion to Captain follows that period of applied leadership. “It comes with a great sense of responsibility,” he said. “While the promotion is gratifying, I feel like there is still a lot to do and a lot to learn.”
As Captain, he will oversee daily operations, supervise personnel, and help ensure the department continues to meet the needs of residents. The role also includes coordination with other City departments and addressing situations that extend beyond emergency response.
He described his leadership style as adaptive, with an emphasis on meeting crew members at their individual skill levels and supporting their development. His priorities include maintaining alignment with the department’s mission and core values while continuing to focus on service delivery to the community.
Community engagement also remains a key component of the department’s work. Nassmacher said building familiarity with residents through school visits, open houses, and community events helps strengthen trust and improves outcomes during emergencies. “When residents know the crews, they’re more likely to call for help early and work with us during incidents,” he said.
Internally, Nassmacher emphasized the importance of mentorship, citing the influence of multiple mentors throughout his career. “I have been fortunate to have many mentors over the years,” he said. “Their patience, persistence, and guidance have helped shape me into the person I am today.” He added that he values passion for the profession and a commitment to helping others with the people he works alongside.
Outside of work, Nassmacher spends much of his time with his family, including his six-month-old son—a role, he said, that has only deepened his understanding of the responsibility that comes with protecting others.
