Deadline July 8 for Plaza of Fame Nominations PDF E-mail

If you know someone who deserves recognition in the West Carrollton Plaza of Fame, please complete a nomination form by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, July 8. Application forms are available here and in the Civic Center.

Only one person, unless nominated as a couple, will be selected for the award which will be presented during the Aug. 13 city council meeting. Nominees must show a unique or noteworthy contribution to making the city a better place to live.

The award recipient will have his/her name inscribed on a brick in the Civic Center’s Plaza of Fame located near the local branch of Dayton Metro Library.

A three-member city council subcommittee will determine the Plaza of Fame recipient. Some of the guidelines for nominations include:

• Past city employees, as well as city council and commission members, must be out of the position for at least three years at the time of nomination. Exceptions will be made for posthumous nominations.

• Nominees must be current or former residents of the city.

• Because the school district has its own award program, school volunteers will not be considered unless she/he has demonstrated other unique community contributions.

For more information, call the City Manager’s Office at (937) 847-4633.

Wilson Pool to Host Water Safety Class PDF E-mail

Participants of the city’s first Water Safety Class at Wilson Pool on Saturday, June 22, will also receive free admission to swim after completing the course which starts at 9 a.m.

The class is designed to cover the basics of water safety for both adults and children. Red Cross-certified life guard instructors from the West Carrollton YMCA will lead the class. “Our goal is to help people understand what our lifeguards are looking for when they are on duty, and also what parents can do to help keep their children safe,” said Megan Montgomery, Wilson Pool manager.

All class activities will be out of the water and no equipment is necessary. Participants will also receive information about sun safety. Members of the West Carrollton Police and Fire Departments will also have informational booths at the pool during the event.

City Receives Grant for New Playground PDF E-mail

soccer complex webThe City of West Carrollton parks and recreation department is currently installing a new playground at the Soccer Complex located at 4800 Hydraulic Rd.

The city received a $35,250 grant from Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Nature Works grant program to pay for the project.   The new playground includes three slides, a tunnel and several climbing platforms, as well as two awnings for sun protection.

West Carrollton’s Soccer Complex is home to several youth and adult soccer leagues and a site of the MEAD CUSA soccer tournament in September.   Approximately 10,000 people visit the 24-acre complex during the year.

“We actually had to remove the previous equipment a few years ago due to safety concerns,” said Christian Mattingly, parks and recreation director. “It was some of the most heavily-used equipment in the city and was about 17 years old.”

The city saved about $1,500 by installing the new equipment in-house rather than hiring a contractor, according to Mattingly.
